Zambia - Travel/Philately/Numismatics/Memorabilia Profile

Zambia, a landlocked country in Southern Africa bordered by Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia, and Angola has a total land area of 290.587 square miles and a population of over 12.9 million. Zambia is ranked among the poorest countries of the world. Copper mining was its backbone and the economy went down with its decline. Following privatization, copper industry is starting to show growth. The government is trying to improve the country’s situation by diversifying into agriculture, tourism, gemstone, mineral mining, and hydro-power.

Travel Resources:

June through October are the best time to visit Zambia, with September and October being the hottest and consequently the best time for game viewing. Major attractions are the Victoria Falls, Lower Zambezi (the best canoe safari region), Lake Kariba (the largest dam in the world), Livingstone, Kafue National Park (best reserve for antelope and birding), North Luangwa National Park. The staple of Zambia is maize. Nshima thick (maize or cassava porridge) with sides of vegetables, beans, meat, fish, and sour cream is a typical meal.

The first coin of Zambia was a Republic Standard Coinage (12 Pence = 1 Shilling, 20 Shillings = 1 Pound) Copper-Nickel-Zinc 6 Pence issue of 1964 showing National Arms and Date in Obverse and Morning Glory and Denomination in Reverse. The issue has high mintage (3.5M) and catalogs for around a dollar in UNC. The proof has low mintage (5K) but still trades below two dollars – a relative bargain. The first gold coin was a 0.9371 troy ounce 250 Kwacha Coin and Proof issued in 1979 with low mintages (455 and 245 respectively). The issue is valued at a slight premium over bullion value.
