- While passing a CLEP Test guarantees college credit, an AP Test scored on a 1-5 scale does not. Depending on the college, it is a chance one might receive credit if graded at 3 or above. Many colleges tend to give an Advanced standing meaning the credits will still have to be earned.
- CLEP Test is offered year-round while AP is conducted only annually. This restricts the number of credits an AP student can earn. For CLEP students, there is no theoretical limit on the number of credits that can be earned.
- AP Tests are registered through the high school counselor, which comes with a level of bureaucracy – some insist the AP course be taken. For a CLEP test, such requirements are nonexistent– the study involved is about the same.
