Republic
of the Congo, a country in Central Africa bordered by Gabon, Cameroon,
Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo, the exclave of
Cabinda, and the Gulf of Guinea has a total land area of 132,047 square
miles and a population of around 3.7 million. Its topography consists of a
coastal plain, central plateau, and two basins. In earlier days the
economy was dependent on forestry which has led to its decline. However
the petroleum extraction has surged ahead and is the biggest contributor
to its economy. Agriculture and handicrafts also contribute in a small
way to the economy. Other exports include natural gas, diamonds, gold,
iron and phosphate. In the wake of its civil wars and the uneasy peace
prevailing currently tourism is not recommended.
