Republic of Northern Cyprus, a de facto state in the Northern portion
of the Island of Cyprus has a total land area of 1,295 square miles and a

Philatelic Profile:
The first stamps of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus were a set of seven stamps released on July 27, 1974 to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the Republic of Turkey. The set (Scott #1 to #7) catalogs for around $70 MNH and around $55 used. The designs show women sentry, military parade, flag bearers, Anniversary Emblem, Ataturk statue, painting “The Fallen”, and Turkish Flag along with a map of Cyprus. Turkey invaded Cyprus in 1974 and declared the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus to be independent on November 15, 1983. The Island of Cyprus gained independence from Great Britain as a unified country in August 1960. But, tensions between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots that started in the mid-60s eventually resulted in the present situation. Other issues of Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus enjoying good philatelic interest include:
- A set of five stamps released on June 25, 1980 showing Historic Landmarks. The set (Scott #85 to #89) catalogs for around a dollar MNH or used. The designs show Omer’s Shrine in Kyrenia, Entrance Gate at Famagusta, Bella Paise Abbey at Kyrenia, and Selimiye Mosque at Nicosia. Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus released a set of four stamps that were overprints on part of the Flowers of 1981-82. The set (Scott #138 to #141) catalogs for around $3 MNH or used.
- A set of two stamps released on June 30, 1987 in the Europa theme. The set (Scott #204 to #205) catalogs for around $8 MNH and around $3 used. The designs show Shepherd by by Feridun Isiman and Pear Woman by Mehmet Uluhan. Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus has issued a number of stamps in the Europa theme making it one of the most popular themes for collectors. The issues catalog at a premium. The most valuable among them was a sheet of two stamps released on June 30, 1983. The sheet (Scott #127a-b) catalogs for around $100 MNH or used.
- A set of four stamps released on August 21, 1995 in the Tourism theme. The set (Scott #396 to #399) catalogs for around two dollars MNH or used. The designs show Beach Scene of Kyrenia, Sailboats, Ruins at Famagusta, and Saint George Cathedral at Famagusta.
- A set of four stamps released on December 3, 1999 to commemorate the destruction of Turkish Heritage in Southern Cyprus. The set (Scott #490 to #493) catalogs for around $5 MNH or used. The designs show Building at Limassol, Mosque at Evdim, Bayraktar Mosque at Nicosia, and Cami-I Kebir Mosque at Paphos. While this set shows one side of the problem, the destruction is fairly mutual - the presence of Turkish troops in Northern Cyprus has resulted in the destruction of Greek cultural identity in Northern Cyprus.
