Optometry Admission Test (OAT) – Exam Prep and Resources

Optometry Admission Test (OAT) is a standardized test used to determine qualification for admission to a school of optometry in the United States. The scores from this exam along with the work done at the undergraduate level are considered for admission at all schools of optometry in the US and the University of Waterloo in Canada. The test can be taken as many times as wished – a 90-day mandatory wait period between tests applies. The results of the last four attempts are reported on the official score report forwarded automatically to the schools selected in the application – scores are also available to schools via the Optometry Centralized Application Service (OptomCAS). OAT is a computerized multiple-choice test that is available most days of the year at Prometric centers. There is an electronic application process: submit an electronic application at www.opted.org and make the test fee payment using a credit card. Once the application and fee are approved, it is processed and a notification email or letter is sent along with an eligibility number and instructions to call Prometric to schedule the test.

The OAT test is expensive with the fee at $435. The fee includes official score reporting to five optometry schools, unofficial personal copy issued at the test center, and a copy for the pre-optometry test advisor. A $35 fee applies to report scores after completing the OAT application process independent of whether 5 free reports were chosen. Partial (50%) fee waivers are available in cases of severe financial hardship.

The test is 4 hours 50 minutes long and includes a 15-minute tutorial followed by four sections and an optional post-test 15- minute survey with an elective break after the first two sessions. The actual format is below:

Scoring is based on the number of correct answers allowing for guessing. The actual scores in the testing program range from 200 to 400 with the mean at 300 for each section – there are no passing or failing scores. Unofficial test scores are immediately available after taking the test. The score report also shows a percentile figure for each section. Test preparation materials and a sample test are available from their site at www.opted.org. There is also a tutorial designed to familiarize examinees with the format of the questions at the same site. Examinees are required to complete at least one year of collegiate education, including courses in biology, general and organic chemistry, and physics before participation in the OAT – on the average, test takers complete two or three years of college before taking the test.

Dental Admission Test (DAT) – Exam Prep Books and Resources

Dental Admission Test (DAT) is a standardized test for dental school admission in the US and Canada. Though the test format is different between the countries, either test result is accepted for admission in the dental schools of Canada or US. The test can be taken upto three times – beyond that requires special retest permission – a 90-day mandatory wait period between tests applies. It is a computerized multiple-choice test available most days of the year at Prometric centers. The first step in the application process is to obtain a unique personal identifier called DENTPIN from www.ada.org. With that proceed with the DAT application at the same site – once the Department of Testing Services (DTS) processes the application, the Prometric’s system will reflect the status within 48 hours.

The DAT test is very expensive with a fee of $430. The DAT fee does includes score reports to the schools selected on the DAT application regardless of the number of schools selected. A $35 fee applies for sending score reports to a school that was not in the original DAT application. Partial (50%) fee waivers are available in cases of severe financial hardship.

The test is 5 hours long and includes a 15-minute tutorial followed by four sections with another 15-minute break in the middle. There is also an optional post-test 15- minute survey. The actual format is below:

Scoring is based on the number of correct answers allowing for guessing. The scores in the testing program range from 1 to 30 with 17 signifying average performance. Unofficial test scores are immediately available after taking the test. It consists of eight 1-30 scores. The first six scores are directly derived from the test: three scores from the natural science subsections (biology, general chemistry, and organic chemistry), and three from the other sections (perceptual ability, reading comprehension, and quantitative reasoning). The other two scores are summaries of the first six scores: an academic average score which is the average of the following five scores – quantitative reasoning, reading comprehension, biology, general chemistry, and organic chemistry, and the total science score which is a standard score based on the natural science questions.

MCAT Exam Prep Books & Resources – ISBNs and Best Prices

Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) is a standardized test for medical college admission in the US and Canada. The test may be taken up to three times in a calendar year. It is a computerized exam (since 2007) administered as many as 28 times a year by the American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC). AAMC also administers other services for prospective medical students including the American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS), a centralized application processing service available to applicants for the first-year entering classes at participating medical schools.

Basic exam fees start at $300. Fees for other optional test related services like change of test center and late registration is another $70. International test sites have an additional $95 fee as well. There is a Fee Assistance Program (FAP) targeted towards those with extreme financial limitations that reduce the basic fee from $300 to $115.

MCAT can be attempted up to three times in a testing year and up to four times over two consecutive years. There is a lifetime limit of seven times. Note that there is access to your full testing history through AMCAS and medical schools want to see your entire testing history. So, score withholding is not an option.

MCAT has a new format as of April 2015. It has four sections:
  1. Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems,
  2. Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems,
  3. Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations of Behavior, and
  4. Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills.
The format of the exam is as follows:

Scoring is separate for each of the four sections and the total score is the sum of the four section scores. Scores for each section can be between 118 and 132 and the total score will be between 472 and 528. There is no penalty for guessing.

Information on the format of the test and links to study resources are available at their website. Free resources at that link include several pdfs, link to the iCollaborative Pre-Health Collection of over 400 video tutorials, and Khan Academy MCAT Video Collection. LSAT Exam Prep Books and Resources - ISBNs and Best Prices

Law School Admission Test (LSAT) is standardized test for law school admission used in the United States, Canada, and the Caribbean. The Law School Admission Council (LSAC), a nonprofit corporation formed to standardize the admission process for law schools in the United States and Canada, administers it. All law schools approved by the American Bar Association (ABA) are LSAC members, as are Canadian law schools recognized by their territorial law societies or government agencies. LSAC also provides other valuable services, chief among them being the Credential Assembly Service (CAS) which allows streamlining of law school admission process by allowing students to have all transcripts, recommendations, and evaluations sent only once to the LSAC. They in turn consolidate all this along with the LSAT scores and writing samples (part of the LSAT test that is not scored by LSAC) into a report, which is sent to the prospective law schools the student is applying to. Using CAS has since become a requirement for JD (law school – Juris Doctor or Doctorate of Jurisprudence – equivalent to the LLB Bachelor of Law degree outside the US).

The basic fees for the LSAT test is v$180 in the US (Canada slightly higher) and $175 for the Credential Assembly Service (CAS), which is required by all US law schools for JD admission. Fees for other optional test related services such as date change and center change are $90 each. LSAC offers a fee waiver program for US citizens who can demonstrate the absolute inability to pay (tax records). LSAC also offers a free actual test (June 2007) and certain other sample test materials for free in pdf form in their website.

The test itself is very long and takes up to 7 hours to complete. It is administered four times each year and there is no score choice – all test scores from the last 5 years get reported – you can cancel scores within 6 days of taking the test, however. LSAT consists of five 35-minute sections of multiple-choice questions, and a 35-minute writing sample. The writing sample and one of the five sections are not scored. The writing sample is sent as part of the CAS report sent for law schools to evaluate. The unscored multiple-choice test is used to pretest new test questions. The multiple-choice question types may be one of the following:
  • Reading comprehension: Measures the ability to read, with understanding and insight, lengthy and complex materials similar to those encountered in law school. The section contains four sets of reading questions, each consisting of a selection of reading material and associated questions.
  • Analytical reasoning (Logic Games): Measure the ability to understand structure of relationships and to draw logical conclusions about that structure. The questions attempt to measure legal problem solving skills, by having students’ reason deductively about relationships among persons, things, or events.
  • Logical reasoning: Measure the ability to analyze, critically evaluate, and complete arguments as they occur in ordinary language. It involves reading a short passage and answering a question about it. The questions attempt to assess legal reasoning skills by having students draw well-supported conclusions, reasoning by analogy, etc.

GMAT Exam Prep Books and Resources - ISBNs and Best Prices

The Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) offered by the non-profit Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) is a standardized, generic test unrelated to any particular field of study. It aims to measure Math and English language skills deemed necessary to succeed in graduate business studies. It is a Computer Adaptive Test (CAT). Registration is steep with a base fee of $250. Fee waivers for economically disadvantaged test takers are available: up to ten fee waivers are offered to schools to be used at their discretion – so, the game plan would be to check with the schools under your consideration and see if one of the schools approve you for a fee waiver. A free GMAT test preparation software and certain other free resources are available at their website for registered users. The software mimics the technology used by the official GMAT computer based exam.

The format and timing details of the 3.5 hour test is as follows:

The quantitative and verbal sections of the test draw on a computer-adaptive format. From a large pool of potential questions ranging from low to high levels of difficulty each section starts with a question of moderate difficulty. Questions in these sections are dynamically selected based on the answer – a correct answer will result in the subsequent question being more difficult. The logic is to adjust the test to be in sync with the test takers ability level. This process continues until the number of questions required for the section is completed. The negatives are that the test taker has to answer all questions presented, and that random guessing can result in a low score because the software considers even the wrong answers when selecting the next question.
