Philatelic Profile:
Barbuda has issued close to 2000 different stamps despite its very small population. The obvious explanation is that Barbuda issues stamps primarily for the philately market. Stamps of Barbuda are also peculiar in that they issue stamps in spite of being only a part of the country of Antigua and Barbuda. Barbuda stamps can be used in Antigua and vice-versa. The first separate issue came as early as 1922, with ‘Barbuda’ overprints of stamps of the Leeward Islands. Stamps of Antigua and Leeward Islands were both used for postage until 1968. Between 1971 and1973, Antigua stamps were exclusively used. Barbuda issued its own stamps between 1968 and 1971 and then from 1973.
The first stamps of Barbuda were Leeward Islands KGV Key Types of 1912-22 (Scott #51 to #60) overprinted ‘Barbuda’ in black. The set of eleven stamps (Scott #1 to #11) is very valuable at around $350 MNH and around $500 used. The denominations go from half pence all the way up to 5 shillings and the catalog values also go progressively higher. Before and after this two year period, stamps of the Leeward Islands and Antigua were in use in Barbuda.
A set of seventeen stamps (Scott#12 to #28) in the Map and Fish themes issued between 1968 and 1970 are the first stamps with ‘Barbuda’ inscription. The denominations are from half a cent all the way up to $5. The MNH catalog values are almost at par to face values with the used cataloging slightly higher. The set is valued at around $20 MNH and around $30 used. Close to hundred different stamps were issued in the period from 1968 to October 1971. They were very colorful issues with designs that included prominent world figures and Christian themes. Most of these stamps are not valuable cataloging well below face value.
Stamps of Antigua were in use in Barbuda during the period from October 1971 to December 1973. The first issues of Barbuda after the hiatus were Barbuda overprints on stamps of Antigua. The practice continued until September 1974. Around 60-odd overprints were issued during this period. These stamps again are not especially valuable. Overprints on the UPU Centennial Set of seven stamps issued July 15, 1974 (Scott #148 to 154) are the only stamps that catalog for above face value. The set catalogs for around $15 MNH and slightly higher for used. The first issue with a Barbuda inscription was interestingly issued as a part of a set that also included overprints of Antigua issues. The theme of the set (Scott #160 to #166) is the World Cup Soccer Championships and included stamps in seven denominations from 5c to $2.50. The stamps with denominations of 35c, $1.20, and $2.50 had Barbuda inscriptions while the rest of the set were overprints. The practice of issuing stamps with Barbuda inscription as well as Barbuda overprints has continued ever since. A number of stamps with Barbuda inscription were issued in the 70s and early 80s. Most of them catalog less than face value. Between 1988 and 1995, only four designs with the Barbuda inscription were issued. These are relatively more valuable:
